Prudence Crandall
(1803-1890)

from Beverly E. Golemba, Lesser Known Women: A Biographical Dictionary [Boulder and London: Lynne Rienner Publishers, 1992] p. 57

"In 1831 Crandall opened a school for the wealthy young girls of Canterbury, Connecticut. The school was very successful until she allowed the child of a black farmer to enroll; the townspeople demanded that the child be expelled. An advocate of abolition, Crandall countered by soliciting other black children for her school and then announcing she would close the existing school and reopen it as boarding school for black girls. A battle ensued, the town passing a law prohibiting schools for black children. Crandall was arrested for noncompliance; one jury was divided and a second convicted her, but a judge reversed the decision. The townspeople began to terrorize Crandall and her students and finally set fire to the school. Crandall, who had recently married, moved to Illinois and set up a school in her home. After the death of her husband in 1874, she moved to Kansas and devoted her efforts to women's rights. In 1886 Connecticut granted her a small pension. Sunshine for Women encourages you to support our feminist sisters by purchasing their books, reading them, disseminating the ideas they contain, but most especially, by making their book available to our sisters, our daughters, and the community at large by requesting your school library, your public library, and area bookstores to carry their books. Remember it is not enough to write literature, history, and theology, we must pass these works on to future generations. Help us to preserve these works for a new generation by putting them on library bookshelves.
