          Sunshine for Women is pleased to offer this summary of an off-Broadway play, "Trespasses - A Drama in One Act," which is concerned with child molestation. Like the other plays mentioned at this site, it can be used by civic organizations to bring a very serious issue to the attention of the larger community. "Trespasses - A Drama in One Act" is a riveting and engaging look at sexual molestation of a small child and its affect on the child and her family.

Five characters, 4 females, 1 male.

Setting: Oklahoma working class, depression era.

Time: 1 hour, 1 act.

Cast:

          Maggie - the adult woman who is telling the story of her childhood. When the play goes back in time in her memory, the actors interact in pantomime with little Maggie, an invisible child. Maggie, the adult, speaks the child's lines but does not enter into the action nor does she interact with the characters from the past.

          Rose - Maggie's mother, 21, already with an alcohol problem, immature, self-centered, really not wanting to be a mother.

          Granny - Rose's mother who is widowed, and a young grandmother in her late 30s.

          Velma - Rose's younger sister, 17, married to Jim. A loving stay-at-home wife who is madly in love with her husband and whose life revolves around him. She and Jim have no children, so she loves Maggie as if the child is her own.

          Jim - Maggie's uncle and molester, a hard-working oil field worker and a deacon in the Baptist church.

          The story centers on the interaction in the family leading up to the molestation and Maggies' response to her violation as a child and as an adult. A very emotional scene when Rose discovers as she is bathing her daughter that the little girl has been molested. Rose seeks advice from her mother on what to do because she doesn't want to hurt Velma, her sister. Finally, a family confrontation, and the fallout from that. The first molestation is actually shown on stage in order to show the impact on the child immediately before and after the act, and how molesters intimidate and threaten their victims.
