August 2002: Hiroshima and Nagasaki, 1945
One of the little remembered and even more rarely debated government policies resulting from the events of Sept. 11, 2001 was the financing of the development of a new generation of miniature nuclear weapons -- weapons that some politicians believe the American people are more prepared to use on a battlefield than existing nuclear weapons. The deafening silence of religious right moralists speaks volumes about the true nature of religious conservatives. So I suppose it is up to us Liberals of faith to examine the morality of such a government policy. The money spent on the development of those weapons would be much better spent by building schools and hospitals abroad, turning foes into friends and swords into plowshares.
With talk of war filling the air, it behooves us to reflect on what war, nuclear and non-nuclear war, is really like. With that, the August 2002 banner presentation is about the use of nuclear weapons on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Our allies do not seem anxious to help us in a new war. Perhaps it is because they remember the last war, including the fire bombing of Dresden.

In this speech, Fredrick Douglass challenges Americans to make those glorious words in the Declaration of Independence that have resonated throughout the ages to people around the world apply to ALL Americans, indeed to "ALL humanity," since all people have all been created equal by nature's God. Have a safe and happy holiday.

Sunshine for Women encourages you to support our feminist sisters by purchasing their books, reading them, disseminating the ideas they contain, but most especially, by making their book available to our sisters, our daughters, and the community at large by requesting your school library, your public library, and area bookstores to carry their books. Remember it is not enough to write literature, history, and theology, we must pass these works on to future generations. Help us to preserve these works for a new generation by putting them on library bookshelves.
