WHAT IS THE MATILDA JOSLYN GAGE FOUNDATION?

The mission of the Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation is to promote an increased understanding of the life, work, times and co-workers of Matilda Joslyn Gage. We emphasize the ongoing relevance of her issues, including her contribution to the women’s rights movement, her work as an abolitionist, her relationship with the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), her influence on the work of L. Frank Baum, and her commitment to free religious thought and the separation of church and state.

To carry out this mission, we will own, preserve and maintain her historic home for programming, education and research. The Foundation recently purchased Gage’s home in Fayetteville, New York, and will soon begin restoration.

  • We have held two national conferences, conducted educational programs for over 2000 visitors and spoken to more than 50 community groups. Our 50+ volunteers nationwide contributed over $50,000 in services last year.
  • Among future projects is the Path of Friendship Program, which will bring together the Onondaga Nation, the Girl Scout Council of Central New York and the Gage Foundation to develop a Girl Scout patch which celebrates the inspiration suffragists received from the superior rights of native women.

The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation, Inc. is a not-for-profit, tax-exempt organization.

Join us as we restore this woman to her rightful place in history.
