The Legacy of Gage
Second Matilda Joslyn Gage Conference
March 24-26, 2000
Fayetteville, New York

The year 1998 is the centennial of the death of Matilda Joslyn Gage. It will also be the sesquicentennial year of the first women's rights convention at Seneca Falls, as well as the sesquicentennial of the City of Syracuse, where Gage published her newspaper, The National Citizen and Ballot Box. This should be a time when Gage's work is brought more clearly to the fore, and when attention is given to the preservation of her legacy. Toward this end, work has begun on the organization of The Matilda Joslyn Gage Foundation.

Gage HomeThe Foundation promotes awareness of Gage's many contributions as an integral part of the 19th century struggle for women'srights. A major focus of initial efforts will be to explore ways to incorporate Gage's Fayetteville, NY home into educational projects in cooperation with local organizations interested in her life in Fayetteville, and with others interested in the history of the women's rights movement. To make this possible, many of Gage's possessions could be brought back to Fayetteville for display, and several collections of material related to women's history are being assembled for possible future use.
