The Bible

The Bible, as God's inspired word, is considered authoritative and all sufficient for all our needs. Perhaps no place else is that all sufficiency better expressed than in the following passage:

2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NKJV) "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work."

Since there are a number of different English translations that use different choices for the meanings of the Greek words used the following is provided to assist the reader in understanding the full significance of the passage*.

"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God (theopneustos), and is profitable (ophelimos) for doctrine (didaskalia), for reproof (elegchos), for correction (epanorthosis), for instruction (paideia) in righteousness (dikaiosune), that the man of God may be complete (artios), thoroughly equipped (exartizo) for every good work."

G2315. theopneustos; divinely breathed in: -- given by inspiration of God.

G5624. ophelimos; helpful or serviceable, i.e. advantageous: -- profit (-able).

G1319. didaskalia; instruction (the function or the information): -- doctrine, learning, teaching.

G1650. elegchos; proof, conviction: -- evidence, reproof.

G1882. epanorthosis; a straightening up again, i.e. (fig.) rectification (reformation): -- correction.

G3809. paideia; tutorage; i.e. education or training; by impl. disciplinary correction: -- chastening, chastisement, instruction, nurture.

G1343. dikaiosune; equity (of character or act); spec. (Chr.) justification: -- righteousness.

G739. artios; fresh, i.e. (by impl.) complete: -- perfect.

G1822. exartizo; to finish out (time); fig. to equip fully (a teacher): -- accomplish, thoroughly furnish.

Other scripture that addresses the all sufficiency of the Bible include the following:

Romans 15:4 "For whatever was written in earlier times was written for our instruction, that through perseverance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope."

1 Timothy 4:6 "In pointing out these things to the brethren, you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus, constantly nourished on the words of the faith and of the sound doctrine which you have been following."

We have no need for any sourch other than the Bible and especially have no need for the "wisdom" of man.

1 Corinthians 1:19-20 "For it is written, 'I WILL DESTROY THE WISDOM OF THE WISE, AND THE CLEVERNESS OF THE CLEVER I WILL SET ASIDE.' Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?"

Colossians 2:8 "See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ."

In all things we invite the reader to be like the Bereans and search the scriptures to see if what we say is so.

Acts 17:11 "Now these were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, for they received the word with great eagerness, examining the Scriptures daily, to see whether these things were so."
