The Republican Party Platform in 1992, and again in 1996, called for a "Human Life Amendment". According to its supporters, life begins at conception and should be accorded all of the rights and protections of a fully developed human being. Further, its supporters argue that any impediment to the development of the fertilized egg is tantamount to murder.
Both the birth control pill and the IUD function by inhibiting the implantation of the fertilized egg in the womb, interfering in the development of the fertilized egg. "Pro-lifers" conclude that women who use these artificial methods of birth control are no different from women who have abortions. Through the HLA, many "anti-abortion", "pro-life" advocates intend to deprive women not only of access to abortion but also to the most popular means of artificial birth control.
My contacts in the religious right contend that both groups of women deserve to die since they have performed "the most horiffic crime possible, the murder of their own children."
Is anyone else out there concerned that the HLA would take away woman's right to BIRTH CONTROL?
How would the HLA be enforced?
Would the birth control pill become an illegal drug?
Would the birth control pill become illegal to manufacture?
Would an IUD become an illegal device to own? to use?
How would the government determine if a woman was using an IUD?
Could the government force a woman to submit to a search of her uterus?
Would drugs which mimic RU486 become illegal and the new drugs of choice (pardon the pun)?
Would all drugs, including some of our most powerful drugs, which induce abortions as a side affect become illegal?
Would the desire for these drug spawn a new Mafia?
Is death the appropriate penalty for a woman who has an abortion? for women who use one of the forbidden methods of contraception?
Would American's learn to hold the constitution and the law in contempt?
In this overpopulated world, is it moral to encourage woman who remain fertile for 35 to 40 years to forgo birth control? Would this country's population explode?
It seems to me that the human life amendment would only create problems and solve none.
Abortion with an Attitude

Sunshine for Women encourages you to support our feminist sisters by purchasing their books, reading them, disseminating the ideas they contain, but most especially, by making their book available to our sisters, our daughters, and the community at large by requesting your school library, your public library, and area bookstores to carry their books. Remember it is not enough to write literature, history, and theology, we must pass these works on to future generations. Help us to preserve these works for a new generation by putting them on library bookshelves.
